This time, we wanted to try out the 3D/4D technology which is quite impressive. With this kind of ultrasound, we were able to see some facial features already. We think the baby looks kind of like Joshua. What do you think?

Fatherhood

This is my second editorial on this site so far. This time I want to share something that has been on my mind for a little while. During the past few months, the concept of fatherhood has touched me in several ways. Of course, I have been a father for over 2 years already, but I have recently experienced some new things that have expanded my experience of "fatherhood".

On September 3, 2005, I nearly lost my father. He suffered from a heart attack and only recovered thanks to the great CPR he received. For several days my dad was unconscious and I was not sure what was going to happen to him. Those days of uncertainty made me do some soulsearching. As I put Joshua down every night, I felt a tremendous love and a strong bond between my son and I. And then I realized that my father also loved me the same way that I love my son. This realization made me appreciate and love my father even more. As a father, I know that I love my son unconditionally, and that is the same kind of love that my father has given me. I am just very thankful to God that my father survived his heart attack and that I now am still both father and son at the same time.

Having had this first hand experience of the father-son love relationship from both sides, I now also start to have a glimpse of the Love that God the Father has towards us, his children, and towards His son Jesus Christ. Every day, Joshua is bringing me more joy, and I truly enjoy fatherhood. In the same way, I believe that God also enjoys His children. That is why He desires us to love him, because He loved us first. And we in turn "love [others] because he first loved us." (1 John 4:19)

Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God? (John 1:12)

Joshua Widjaja's milestone

Yesterday October 9, Joshua hit a new milestone. It was the first time that he used a fork to feed himself. We were at the Indian restaurant "Clay Oven" in San Mateo, when Joshua decided on his own that he wanted to eat his pieces of Nan bread with a fork rather than with his fingers.

Taking a break from television

This is one of my first actual editorials on this site. Last saturday, I came to realize that I spend way too much time in front of the television. Having a ReplayTV unit, I can watch my shows anytime, at the oddest hours. When I watch TV in the evenings, I rob that time from doing more meaningful things, such as spending time with my family, or doing productive things around the house. I felt that I was a slave to TV and wanted to break that habit.

So for this week, I am taking a break from television. This will allow me to refocus on priorities. Do things that I usually do not have time doing. And see whether I really miss watching television.

Joshua, the Alphabet man

Joshua has quite improved his Alphabet skills. He is now able to name almost all 26 letters when shown in front of him!

Parenthood is a challenge and a blessing at the same time. Seeing Joshua grow up brings us joy, but it does come with a sacrifice of freedom, time, and energy.

We named Joshua after the Joshua who led the Israelites into the promised land. Joshua also happens to be the Hebrew variant of Jesus.

May the Lord grow our son in Wisdom and strength.
